44 B sludge in the crankcase

Changing the oil in the 44 B, I can feel, with my finger through the oil drain hole, a lot of sludge inside the crankcase; is there some method to clean this out? Some kind of flush to run in it? Diesel fuel? Are those inspection plates just to the front of the oil drain plug to maybe open up and clean out manually?

I found the same in my B. I removed the oil pump (that thing you called an inspection cover) so I had a big 5 inch hole to flush the stuff out through. Then I poured in solvent (mineral spirits) through the crankcase top cover (another cover you can remove). Then I brushed and scrubbed. Then I used a sprayer to spray solvent in the crankcase and wash everything clean with some more brush and scrub work.
While you have the oil pump out you can inspect and clean the screen on it.

Those "inspection plates" is the oil pump. Pulling the bottom one off, you will have the oil pump gears in your hand. Pull off the big one and the pump will fall down. I don't recommend doing any thing with the pump. Pull the top plate off of the crank case. Drain it and put the plug in the bottom. Put some gas in the crankcase and with your hand swish it around. Drain it. Repeat as necessary. There is a screen around the oil filter housing. Make sure that is clean. The housing is at the back of the crankcase, inside. Need anymore help. Just holler.

The top cover to the crankcase is what the starter is bolted to? How do I get the oil pump screen off?

Yes, you have to remove the starter. The easyest way to clean the crankcase. The screen is one piece, wrapped around the oil pump. I made a mistake in telling you the housing. It is held on by a wire wrapped around the housing. The only easy way to remove the screen is to take the pump out. Not fun or easy. As you have to remove all of the oil lines from the pump. Not allot of room to work. And drop the pump out from the bottom. If you do, go to Deere and get all of the gaskets for the pump. Cheap from Deere and they still have them. Any more help, just holler.
