Follow me if you can. I have the voltage regulator and generator wired the following way. From ammeter to "BAT" on voltage regulator. From F terminal on generator to F terminal on voltage regulator. From A terminal on generator to terminal on bottom of regulator. When hooked up like this the generator get really hot. the bottom post on voltage regulator is not marked: I am assuming that this is the GEN terminal. There is also a L terminal on the voltage regulator that they say was only used to a certain serial number and my tractor is after that serial number.

Matt, if sure sounds like you have it hooked up correctly. That [L] terminal can be just left open if you power your lights & ignition from the [BAT] terminal on the regulator or from the ammeter.
~Is the generator getting hot while it's running? If so how hot? Somewhat hot is normal if it's charging.
~If it's getting hot while not running it sounds like your internal cut-out relay is stuck, does the ammeter show a discharge with the engine not running?]... Pull the wire off the generator [A] terminal & see if that wire has battery power with everything shut off, if so your cut-out is stuck or something in the regulator is shorting battery power to the [GEN] terminal. The [A] post on the generator should be non powered until the generator starts charging.
~That unmarked wire coming from the bottom back of the regulator is usually the [GEN] terminal, if you have identified all the others as [BAT], [L], [F], the only one that's left is the [GEN] terminal.....

Hey Clooney, here is exactly what happened. After driving tractor for approx. 15 minutes it was turned off. I'm not sure when but at some point after tractor was turned off the ammeter pegged on the negative side and the generator started to smoke. I then removed the BAT wire from the voltage regulator and ammeter returned to normal. I then hooked it back up and the ammeter stayed normal. Please Help. If John T. is reading thanks for your help also.

Matt, that's pretty scary to me. Even if cutout relay stuck on the meter shouldn't peg, that's a lot of current. And any smoke is not good at all. If it were mine, I'd take the generator apart and take the armature to the closest garage that has a growler tester to test for a shorted armature. Or look for any signs of 'slung' solder on the inside of the generator housing near the brushes. If you see a line of slivery specks there, I'm afraid she is toast.

Intermitent short can explain why it doesn't short all the time. A growler will stress the armature such that either a dead spot will be found or it will go ahead and short right on the growler. If its a good armature, the growler won't hurt it.

Hey Matt, I agree with clooneys ideas, the main thing which can cause the ammeter to peg discarging ater you shut off the tractor is that the contact points on the cut out relay portion of your VR stuck closed. That causes the battery to reverse discharge through the generators armature windigns dead to ground causing a good amount of current and resultant heat to develop. I have cleraned and sanded sticking relay contact points before which helped, but same as ignition points, once the smooth silver like coating has been burned off, they may easily stick again. Watch that ammeter carefully upon shut down cuz it could happen again. If it continues and those relay contact points appear burned or carboned, I would replace the VR. Good Luck John T

Matt, it sure sounds like the points stuck closed on the voltage regulator cut out relay. ~Some regulators are for a specific ground & although they will function at the non designed ground are prone to the points sticking after prolonged usage.
~Is there any chance you have a 6 volt regulator on that 70?

It is a brand new voltage regulator and it says 12 volt positive ground on the side.

Matt, about the only thing that can cause the [A] post to stay powered after the engine is shut down is sticking cut-out relay contacts, or something else allowing power from the [BAT] terminal to reach the [GEN] terminal or wire.
~You might want to try it again to see if the sticking was a one time deal. Just watch the ammeter when you shut it down & if it stays at discharge pull the cover off the voltage regulator & see if the cut-out points are stuck closed. Just because that regulator is new doesn't mean it's not defective.....

Hey there Matt, Sorry, Im not the clooney man, but maybe can help you a bit at least till he gets here.

What you have is a 4 wire Voltage Regulator and you have it correct in that its BAT terminal goes to the load (non battery) side of the ammeter, and on those 4 wire VR systems, however, theres not supposed to be any other loads (like lights and ignition switch) on the ammeter there. The loads like lights and ignition switch etc are supposed to be fed off the (L) Load terminal on a true 4 wire VR system.

On most of the 4 wire VR''s Ive seen, the lone terminal off the bottom or on a side all by itself (sometimes a wire out not even a terminal) is the ARM or GEN terminal, and yes it goes to the Armature post on the generator.

Are you sure you have the generators Armature and Field connected to the right VR terminals?? The Armature post is the larger of the 2 posts while the Field post is the smaller.

Did you originally have a 3 or a 4 wire Voltage Regulator????? ??

Are you still at pos ground, and is the new VR rated for pos or neg ground???? Some work on either, some dont is why Im asking.

Do you now have the loads like lights or ignition fed from the VR's L terminal, or are they connected to the ammeters load side where you connected the wire to the VR's BAT terminal???

Take a look at all this and check to see if the Generator is well grounded and the VR is well grounded to the generator. You may have things mis wired, a VR that isnt correct for your ground, a bad ground connection somewhere, or youre gonna have to wire it as a 4 wire VR system (switch loads from ammeters load side over to the VR's L terminal).

Hope this helps some (and the info you post back to my questions) till clooney can advise you further.

Good Luck, God Bless, and please pray for our troops. JOhn T Nordhoff in Indiana
