How many grades of roll a matics were there and what is the difference. I just bought one for a 4020 and it is supposed to be a heavy duty one, but I don't know how to tell. Are heavy duty ones harder to find, Will all of them fit the same tractors and any other info would be appreciated. Will these fit 4230,4240 etc. Thanks for your help, you guys are a great source of knowledge.

The Roll-o-Matic front end was not availible on the 4230 and 4240, however I have heard of a 4040 with a Roll-o-Matic front end

ac in TN,

Other than the oddball Roll-O-Matic used on the 1010 and 2010 tractors as far as I know all the Roll-O-Matic units are interchangeable from the 50/60/70 thru the last tractors to offer them, which goes quite a ways up into the New Generation. There are 4 basic Roll-O-Matic units, identifiable as what I call light, regular, heavy duty and super heavy duty.

Light duty: Spindles B2711R R.H. and B2712R L.H. for the 50/520/530

Regular duty: Spindles A3471R R.H. and A3472R L.H. for the 60/70/620/630/720/730 and heavy duty for the 50/520/530.

Heavy duty: Spindle R20258R L.H. and R20254R R.H. for the 3010/4010 and later tractors and heavy duty for the 620/630/720/730.

Super heavy duty: Spindles R30387R L.H. and R30388R R.H. heavy duty for the 3010/4010 and later tractors.

I would say the heavy duty ones are fewer and farther between and will cost more, but they are available as most have been taken off the New Gen. tractors and replaced with the more disired wide fronts. I have 4 720's and only my Gas burner has the regular duty Roll-O-Matic that it came with. One 720D has a light duty on it and the other two have the super heavy duties on them. Go figure.

Hope this helps,

Poor Farm Jim

Roll a matics had some changes over the years. even though the parts book show the main casting as one part they are realy 3 parts. The bottom casting and the top casting is held together with a shaft. The shaft is riveted to the castings. The early ones had one rivet in the top casting and the later ones had 2 rivets. This is a mistake some guys belive is the differants between a reg and heavy duty. These are all reg roll a matics. The heavy duty ones have bigger spindals and larger bearings. A standard roll a matic has 3 bolts on the casting that covers the bearings and the heavy duty ones have 4 bolts on this casting. We broke off the roll a matic off our 730D and I bought one at a auction that was on a 4000 (the 4000 sold with a JD WF) for $75.00. It was advertized as a heavy duty but was a reg one.

P.S. If indeed you do have a heavy duty, I hope you got it with the hubs. The hubs with the 3 bolt casting that covers the bearings will fit all Roll A Matic's and wide fronts, but because of the bigger bearings on the heavy duty those hubs are differant. When we first broke off the Roll A Matic off our 730D, I put on a single rivet one I have had around here for years. Turned out one spindel was bend so one tire had a differant toe in angle. And the leaping deere on the steering wheel was off 1/2 turn meaning the shaft had a twist in it. That is why I bought the one off the 4000. We Wrecked the bottom part of the main casting on that one, but many years ago we snapped the shaft off of one and had no other damage. We took that one to a machine shop and had them press out the broken shaft and make a new shaft.

Mike:

We broke the Roll-A-Matic pin on our 70D way back when, and got the rivets and the pin from our dealer. It's listed on the Roll-A-Matic page as "items listed but not pictured". I say this just in case you or someone else wanted to fix a twisted or broken pin to reclaim an assembly.

You might have already been aware of these parts being available. The pin, R20118 is listed on JDParts.com right now at $116.94. Not cheap, but available !
