44 B with magnito ignition dies when under load. Idles ok but give it gas and put load on, it dies. What do I check? Is it the govener, magnito or carb?

MWM, as John said check the fuel flow [more than likely that's your problem]. ~If the fuel flow checks out good you probably need to pull the float bowl, then remove the main nozzle & clean the little holes in the side of the main nozzle [common problem]..
~Try opening the load needle up a little, start at 1 turn out from seated then open from there & try it....

Mornin MWM, Well, yours is a pretty open ended question with several possible causes, so I will just go into a few basics now and ask some questions and maybe you can post back more info.

1) When you say it dies under load, you mean it just like shuts off completely dead like theres no spark ORRRRR RRRRR does it sort of sputter and die out but continue running if you ligthen the load and idle her down???

2) Does choking her a bit when she starts to die out help it???

3) Does she black smoke before she cuts out???

4) Does she die at any high RPM, or just if theres a load applied???

Im trying to see if its fuel or ignition related via these questions.

Here are a few things to look at before you post back: (Try # 6 first)

5) Open the carbs lower bottom bowl drain petcock and with the gas on see if she runs out a good steady continuous gas stream as big as a pencil lead???? If not, remove the fuel line from the carb and see if a full ID line size of gas runs out continuous??? If not, remove the glass sediment bowl (if it has one) and see if a good stream of gas flows down where it would fill the bowl. Im looking here to see if the carb is gettign a good gas flow and/or where it may be stopped up. You gotta have good gas flow out the carbs bottom drain cock before she will pull good under a heavy load.

You might also check to see if the chokes butterfly plate is actually opening and closing and is not free but stays where its set by the choke rod.

6) Have you tried tweakign (may need opened a bit) the carbs top load and idle needles??? See if opening the load (one farthest from you as youre on left flywheel side) needle a bit helps cure the problem. The initial rough in settings are about 1 turn out on load and 2 out on idle needles. You might even try that before the carbs fuel test cuz that alone may cure the problem.

7) Take a look at the air cleaners lower bowl to se if its clean and water free and not clogged up.

IGNITION

See if the plugs are good and clean and not all carboned up or fouled or black oily looking, and better yet, installl a new set of Autolite 388 or similar and see if that cures it. You should have wire core wires, not auto supressor carbon types.

See if the points are clean, not gray oxidized, and gapped at 0.015. If only gray try and clean them, but if burned or carboned up or pitted, replace them. Inspect the cap for cracks or oil residue or carbon tracks.

SUMMARY, Try and adjust the carbs load and idle needles, do the fuel flow tests, clean or replace the plugs, clean and re gap or replace the points and then post back what all you find includign the earlier questions above. I guess you have good clean water free fuel??? cuz that can be the problem.

God Bless the USA, Please pray for our troops.
