Guys, I've got a 4020 Propane, I've owned it for several years, its always used oil. I'm tearing it down now for overhaul. I've got the pistons out now and I find that the top ring on cylinders 1 and 3 is broke, I mean broke in almost exactly half! I'm just curious as to what you all might think---like why would this have happened??? I bought this tractor from the second owner. The tractor is a 67, the original owner (according to the guy I bought it from) died not to long after he bought it new and then he bought it and had it until I bought it. The amazing thing about this is that the tractor started good, ran good and had good power, but used oil. I haven't dropped a main bearing cap yet, but the crankshaft looks absolutely perfect...its got federal mogul brearing in it, so I'm assuming its been overhauled at sometime. I'm just curious as to what you all might guess as to what might have caused this.

Larry, from my experience you[it] had ignition trouble.Look in to PECTRONIC IGNITION system,it will make the tractor run better yet.Good luck Fritz.

The lack of sludge and wear is the beauty of LP. It may have so many hours the rings cracked of fatigue. Detonation from spark scatter due to a worn distributer, too far advanced ignition, too lean mixture, heavy continous lugging, overheating maybe a factor. Wouldn't mind a late 4020LP myself.
