I am going to help my uncle get his MT running. We think that the distributor was removed and not put back on properly. My question is how to get the gears right and in time. It has a hot spark and plenty of fuel. It is a gasoline by the way. Thanks for any information

I set the timing on a 420 with a timing light shining through the viewing hole for looking at the marks on the flywheel. I bet if you look in the operators manual it would describe how to do it. If the M is the same as the 420 (procedure wise) it is really the easy to go and you can observe if the centrifical advance is working properly at the same time. Good luck.

If oil pump has not been removed.
1. loosen screw to gain access to timing hole 2.Remove spark plug from #1 (front plug)
3.crank slowly until pressure is felt with thumb over hole.
4. continue to crank until spark mark on flywheel lines up with timing marks on hole
5. insert distributor in well of cylinder block with terminal entending away from engine, Make sure distributor is in fully in oil pump slot.
6. twist distributor cam counterclockwise as far as possible to take up spark advance. Hold cam in this position while adjusting points to .018 to .022 setting. 7.with distributor cam held in this position rotate distributior until the points just start to open.
8.Install distributor clamp. 9. Good Luck./. Russ
