I have a 4430 that has been running fine this spring. A few days ago I tried to start it and when I turned the key the starter relay on the firewall just clicked. When I inspected it, it was melted, I replaced it and the harness that plugs into it. The new relay still just clicks when the key is turned, just like the old one. I know the ground on the oil filter base is good and the starter solenoid is good. Any other suggestions??? And also are there bolts on the back side of the starter? If so how do I get to them to remove the starter?

Please be very carefull when trouble shooting a no start with the 4430. My father had been experiencing similar problems with no starts on his 4430, and in addition, the neutral gear linkage was very "slippery". While attempting to start it from the ground, the tractor started and jumped into gear. He was run over the entire length of his body. There were a dozen injuries to his body, but he survived. A broken man, but alive.

Thanks for all the replies, After replacing several parts and wires I found a corn stalk had knocked the wire off the neutral safety switch on the side of the trans. Don't I feel dumb.

Had this same problem. Replaced all the wiring and the battery's, turned out the neutral switch was out of it. Took it to the dealer and they fixed it. Good luck.

check with a test light if you get power to the starter solenoid 's' terminal when operating the starter with the key swich. (best done with an homemade test light with a large (21w) bulb).
if there is power, the problem is with the starter, if not, the problem is with the circuit.
if it's narrowed down to a solenoid problem, some solenoids can be replaced without removing the starter.

If the relay clicks, the neutral start switch is good.

I had the same problem a year ago mine was solved when the relay was replaced. The bolts on the starter can be reached with a unversal joint on a 3/8" drive socket. Before you remove the starter make sure the batteries and posts are clean and in good condition prior to involving yourself with the removal and replacment aof the starter.
