70D Pony Cooling

The JD service manual on a 70D states the water for cooling the pony motor is pulled from the right side of the diesel block and and flows into the diesel engine upper water manifold. Why is the pipe cool going into the pony at the top and hot coming from the water pump to the diesel engine block when the pony is running. This is an early 70D without the thermostat in the pony. If the coolant was flowing as the book says into the upper water manifold I would think as warm water rises it would not go into the diesel head but flow up through the upper water pipe into the radiator.

I had a problem with my pony cooling too. Here's what happened: the water pump is driven by the oil pump through a bevel gear. On mine, and I have no idea how this happened, one bevel gear backed away from the other. They're press fit on their shafts. This much I know, the hot water comes out the top pipe. Take your lower pipe off and see if your impeller is turning. Then try to keep it from turning with a dowel or some thing soft as you crank it with the starter motor. Might as well go to straight water for the time being, you might be jackin around for a while to fix it.

Duane:

I agree with your description of the coolant flow. I went out and ran my pony and the upper poipe gets hot first. In fact if you run it long enough, you can get an indication of heat on the main engine temp gauge, well before the side block mounted pipe gets warm.

Rich:

Remember there is a main engine thermostat in the upper water pipe, so the water should circulate within the diesel block and head via the pony water pump. That way, if and only if you got the main water jacket so hot by running the pony, the main engine thermostat would open, and allow that "hot" coolant to flow up to the radiator.

I'll check mine fow flow direction sometime this morning.

Frank
