Ok, I have to plead stupidity here but.....

Tonight I was plowing with our 40T with 3pt plow (2 14" bottom) and I just couldn't get it right. Now I have to admitt it been years since I have plowed but I know that it should run 2nd gear fairly well (did this when I was younger). Anyways, tonight I had to use 1st gear now I know that I have the power since we have done a lot of work on the engine and I never remember it having this much power (it actually will lug way down now as opposed to stall). I figure that it has to be in the adjustments but I am not sure where. I tinkered a bit with it but just can't seem to land on what it should be and since I have some more to do I would like to get it right. Dad, wasn't much help on the adjustment part, it used to be when I was younger he would just look at it mounted on the tractor and tell me it was off. Now for the stupidity part, I never asked him questions about it or for that matter paid much attention to how he set it up..... dumb dumb dumb. (You know it is amazing how much you wish you did years ago) Anyways, I am hoping one of you folks who do this more often than I can give me a hand on how to set up this plow and some tips.

I think 2-14 are quite a load unless the soil is somewhat loose. Mine generally will loose traction in 2nd gear before stalling. Might be different if you have weights on the rear wheels.

PB, if you have a model 412 plow I can get you the set-up specs from the owners manual tonight. Depending on the depth, soil type, rusted moldboards?, I can see the 40 having a hard time with 2 14s in 2nd gear. As others have said, the plow should be level with the ground, both front to back and side to side. The landing is a little more dificult to set but assuming this plow was used before on this tractor and not messed with it should be OK.

PB, You should have fun plowing with that combination. As a general rule I set the right side 3 pt arm 1 inch shorter than the left(looking at back of tractor) then adjust your center link so it is plowing level from front to back. If still having trouble you may have to adjust the pitch of your crossbar between arms so the plow is pulling straight. That makes a big difference in how hard the plow pulls. I am assuming you adjusted rear wheel spacing for the plow you are using!

Without having a book back in the good ole days - we just set the center link on the 3 point so the plow was running parallel to the ground when plowing - ie front plow at the same depth as the back one. Once you have dropped into a furrow that is the depth that you want to average when plowing turn the crank on the side link so that the plow is running flat on a plane that would be perpendicular to the tractor, ie not tilted right or left.

PB, back in the late 50's we used two 14's to break land with a 40T, and had to use 1st. gear most of the time, especially if plowing at a decent depth. Also that was in a part of the South with red clay soil.
I would say you would need to use 1st. in order to plow a good depth and make it eaiser on the ole 40.
