I just recently purchased a '69 4020 with a Synchro trans and am very happy with it so far. The power brakes are noisy thought. They groan/chatter when applied lightly. They'll lock the wheels easily, but the noise has me concerned. I'm sure they need some attention, but am hoping someone can give me some ideas what I'm up against. I ordered the JD manuals but haven't got them yet. Thanks for the help.

My family farm has had a 2520 since it was new (1968?) and the brakes have always done this. The noise/pattern has been consistent since new. I agree that a fluid change is a good idea but our dealer told us the chatter/grind was normal.

chatter in wet brakes is mostly related to improper tranmission fluid or a high percentage of other fluids mixed with the original fluid (due to implment usage with other brands of tractors).
best thing to do is to drain the fluid, check the suction screen and if it's clean, put in new john deere or equivalent oil and filter.
if there is a brake lining residue (black remains and bronze fibers} on the screen, then you probably need a brake job.

John Deere fluid has an anti chatter additive. If pads are saturated may take a while for them to quiet down. If you do your own brake job, spring for OE Deere parts, you won't be happy with aftermarket parts They don't seem to hold up under severe applications.

Thanks. Tractor was dealer serviced right before I purchased it so I'll give it awhile and see if it quiets any. Thanks again.
