Hello all,

I am restoring an H and repairing a B and was curious about replacing parts ie: Tires, with less expensive foreign made tires? My feeling is that it may be fine for those with unlimited $$$ to be "GREEN CORRECT" but I am trying to do this on a budget and still have a nice tractor to parade around on. Am I going to be ridiculed because I did not buy the correct tire brand that was originally on the tractor? I do not forsee entering any competition shows and I hate to put all that $$$ in a tractor that will never work another day in it's life. Whats' you guys opinion?

Thanks
Denny

The Green Police are not all bad. Their presence does reduce the amount of truely rude, crude and dangerous tinker fixes. The addition of fuzzy dice etc, while it looks strange it isn't a felony crime.

If it suits you and you will be satisified with it, then by all means go with the cheaper tires. If you catch too much flack from the police, just tell them that you did it for yourself and not for them. After all whose tractor is it anyway. As long as you enjoy it, who cares about the so called green police.

Denny, that question is never very far from the minds of those who collect John Deere tractors; or any other make for that matter; and I've though about it plenty myself. The reality is that: "You can't be HALF pregnant." You either make a politically correct restro or you don't. If you are going to show these tractors as totally restored-to-original that's one thing; for your own enjoyment is another. As Al pointed out, if you aren't going to be a correctness competitor, no problem. We've made the decision to NOT try and make our '52 JD"A" better-than-new; that it is in good enough shape just in it's fifty-year-old working clothes to do what we want to do and that's start it, drive it, mow a little with it, and FEEL THE VIBRATION that takes us back in time to a simpler, safer place. We have after market Behlen steering assist, and that alone is a "spoiler", so if we want to put some big chrome headlights on it later on down the road, that'll be fine too. I've learned by hanging around the Model A Ford bunch that trying to be perfect is a good way to ruin the "hobby". There is always someone who has the correct number of pleats in the upholstry and beats you out. Likewise the Green folks who agonize about every lockwasher. THAT'S OK....it's just not for everyone.

I have read that they don't count off for the 23 degree lugs as 45's are so hard to get anymore. I would get what fits my price range and not worry about it. CLW

Denny,
If it was me, I'd do it! If all you're going to do is "parade around" and not enter the tractor to be "judged" by "the police" go for it!
Some people insist on having an ACCURATE restoration and that's a GREAT way to preserve the history of these old girls.
As for me, I love a nice paint job, no leaks, correct fasteners, etc. but I also USE my 60!

Actually Denny, it can sometimes get tiresome loking at fifteen or twenty, perfectly restored Model B's all parked in a row. I mean, how perfect IS perfect, and the thing is, those tractors all had grease on the deck when we ran them every day. THAT is how they actually looked, and that's how I would prefer to see them. Yes, I have a photo here in the office of a "perfect" Model G so I can wish for one every day. But if I had a G I'd be using it just like we do the A.
