I have just purchased a John Deere 730 Diesel and when i was pulling my disk in third gear and the tractor stoped, and it sounded like grinding gears
so i put it in second and took off but before to long it stoped and stared grinding the same way?
I was wondering if anyone knew what the problem might be. Also the shifting pattern is different than the owners manual shows and I was thinking that it's because it's a early serial number model beacuse the serial number is 7301236 and I'm wondering if John Deere changed the shifting pattern after so many tractors were built. Hope some body can help me out.

Kyle, if you have 1st gear in the upper L/H corner it has stock gear sets in it. If you have 2nd in the upper L/H corner you have the optional 3rd-5th gear sets. That gives you the optional 8 MPH 5th gear & you lose the creeper 1st gear.
~On your shifter problem? Is the lever moving out of the slot or is the lever staying put? The lever movement will tell us a lot about where the problem is.

Kyle, unfortunately the transmission bearings are not an easy job on that diesel. That is one of the hardest of the 2-cylinders to replace the bearings in. It isn't something you can't do yourself but if you aren't familiar with those transmissions, or don't have the right tools & equipment it can be a challenge.

Kyle, Deere added the creeper 1st gear to the 720-730 & that was standard unless the optional 8 mph 5th gear was ordered. Deere added that creeper 1st gear due to the many complaints of the [too fast] 1st gear on the 70. Deere also offered a special 4th/6th gear option.
~I like that 8 mph 5th gear but miss the creeper 1st gear for some tasks.
~That special 2nd-5th is actually a bolt on gear that slides on over the standard 1st gear pinion & is held on with 2 bolts through a plate, then a smaller sliding gear is used. ~That also changes the other gear speeds slightly...old 2nd becomes new 1st,,,old 4th becomes new 3rd,,,old 5th becomes new 4th,,, R & 6th stay the same & the new 2nd & 5th are obviously different due to the gear change.
~If you look in the operators manual that came with your tractor it should show the standard shift pattern. The optional 2nd-5th pattern has 2nd in the upper L/H corner on the L/H quadrant.

The shifter is staying put only in 2nd and 3rd but fourth is jumping out if you don't hold it in

Kyle let me see if I understand your problem? In 2nd it quits pulling & grinds but the shift lever stays put, in 3rd it quits pulling & grinds but the shift lever stays put , in 4th it quits pulling but the lever also moves out of the slot? Is this correct? If this is correct you have two trans problems & the common link is probably worn out bearings.

This is Correct the tractor only slips out of gear in fourth and grinds and stops in 2nd and 3rd.

Kyle, the 4th gear problem is the 4th sliding gear actually moving out of engagement due to a malfunctioning shifter lock, worn gear, worn sliding shaft, or worn & loose bearings...The 2nd & 3rd gear problem is more than likely the overdrive gear set disengaging, probably due to a defective shifter lock or worn bearings. ~With that many gears coming out of engagement I would suspect worn bearings & loose transmission shafts. The only way to tell is to pull the trans top cover & look & feel around inside.

grinding is not good. A friend had the same problem, after $900 plus in parts, and 2 days work we had it straightened out. Sounds like your countershaft bearings are probably loose allowing clearances.
