The owners manual for my model 50 shows the steering wheel starter adapter being used. I can't imagine being able to start the 50 this way. It must have been a ratchet type design otherwise it would rip your fingers off. Even then a good backfire would do it.

Never seen one for sale but it would be handy for setting the valves.

Quoting from the Owner's Manual for JD Model A Ser. No 64,800-UP: "Should the battery charge be too low, the tractor can be cranked by hand. To do this, remove the tractor steering wheel and crankshaft opening cover, insert the stub shaft ratchet and engage with pin in crankshaft. (Stub shaft ratchet can be obtained from your dealer's parts department)." In the Owner's Manual it shows a picture of a man cranking the tractor. His thumbs are on the outside of the steering wheel, not through the spokes. It shows the little crankshaft opening cover laying on the deck just behind the flywheel cover, and the tractor steering wheel is missing.

The previous owner of my tractor, gave me an adapter, which was mounted on a steering wheel. This is for a 1948 B. You have to pull the center cover off the flywheel cover and the tractor can be hand started.

Yep, I've only actually seen one of them, but it goes into the flywheel hole using a special adapter. The folks we got our "A" from had one in their shop which I am STILL trying to get my hands on!

As far as I know these adaptors came with electric start tractors up to 1946. I know we had one with our 1945 B. Was about 4 inches long with notches for the flywheel, and tapered with key to fit the steering wheel. They may not work on later model A's and B's. Russ

We have one of those adapters on an extra steering wheel hanging on the rear light of the '46 B. It is pretty handy when the battery is low!

I believe that the 1947 and later A/B could also use the steering wheel start, you just had to pop a center cover out.

Believe it or not, the electric start Ds also used the steering wheel start!

When I got through restoring my 46 A a couple of years ago I thought why not and went to my local dealer and asked if he could still order the stub shaft. He went in the parts room and brought me out a brand new one. You can start an A with it, is isn't the easiest thing but it is possible. Hope this helps.
