BottomD, even if the regulator is for negative ground it will work at positive ground [for a while]. The only real difference is the coating on the points as some are coated on only one side to reduce point burning & sticking. ~When you polarized it & got a spark that tells us right there that you at least have power to the [BAT] terminal of the reg, it also tell us that the armature circuit is at least powering up so the generator has a good ground. ~So that leaves an improperly wired ammeter [is the ammeter wired with ONE POST to the battery ONLY & ALL the other loads [wires] hooked to the non battery post? ~We still have to account for the field. The best way to test the field & for the possibility of an open in the regulator ground, or wire between the two is to do a running test. ~Make sure the ammeter is wired per above & will read both charge & discharge, then start the tractor & run at fast idle, then short the [F] post [smaller of the two ] to the generator case-[does it charge now?],,,if still no charge, leave the field grounded & run a jumper wire from the generator [A] post to the regulator [BAT] terminal-[does it show a charge now?]...If grounding the field shows a charge you have a bad regulator, open in the wire from the [F] on the generator to the [F] on the regulator, or bad regulator ground...If jumpering the [A] post on the generator to the [BAT] terminal on the regulator shows a charge you have failed regulator or open in the wire from the generator [A] post to the regulator [Gen] terminal. ~If nothing found so far re-check the regulator [BAT] terminal for power & that the ammeter is wired correctly. ~If might not be a bad idea to also re-check the regulator connections...[BAT] on the regulator to the NON-BATTERY side of the ammeter,,,[L] on the regulator to the light & ignition switch [bat] on the back of the ign switch],,,[F] on the regulator to the [F] on the generator,,,[Gen] on the regulator to the [A] post on the generator. ~If you suspect the generator, make sure if it has a 3rd brush & that the 3rd brush is rotated as far as possible in the generator turning direction. ~If still nothing found per above you might want to remove both wires from the generator, then remove the belt, then ground the [F] post on the generator & jump battery power from the [BAT] terminal on the regulator to the [A] post on the generator [it should motor], then remove the [F] ground [it should speed up]. ~Post back with questions or on what you find..... .....
