I would suggest any Dubuque tractor but I like the 420's best. Maybe that is because I have two of them and only a 40C. Stay with a wheeled tractor to begin with. The crawlers, while using the same engine and some other components are a different breed of cat(no pun intended). I have a 420U and it is my favorite of the wheeled versions. It is lower and the wheelbase is a little longer which makes them a little more stable. The options on the 420s and 430s that you might find include power steering, live PTO, 5 speed, and directional reverser. Some of these are very desirable if you plan to use the tractor. I have a Lord loader on my 420U.

I also have a 40C and a 420C. I would not recommend them as a first tractor for several reasons. The most important being that they were made to self destruct. There are a lot of steel against steel moving parts and replacements can be very expensive. Replacement tires are much cheaper than getting into tracks and undercarraige. Another reason is that they are only usable on a dirt surface and even then will dig it all up when you turn. They also tend to weigh more than a wheeled tractor.

I hope that this helps,

CPeter

A picture of my tractor is in the "tractor photos" but I can't make that link work tonight. It is a "420U with Lord Loader".

One that is running!! That allows you to determine the condition of the engine, transmission, hydralics etc. etc.. Until a tractor is runing it is a parts tractor. i.e. The parts that are missing, broken or worn out on your tractor are also missing, broken or worn out one the non-running tractor. After that sermonette, I would buy an A or a B. They are still available on farm auctions in running condition. Saw a late model A and Late B sell on farm auction last year for 1300 and 2500 respectively. Excellent sheet metal on both. Last place I would buy is a consignment auction.
