I have a '66 4020 diesel with the 24/12 system. I have finally come to the conclusion by the slow cranking speed that it is not charging. Last week had a wire fry on it. It appears that the charge light was crammed under the dash and it was crossing over somewhere. The only wire that fried was the wire going to the charge light and it stopped after the connector for the light to the harness.(so the harnes and all else is fine) The wires seem to be hours on end. I cant quite figure it out. I figure if the wires for the Charge light burt up, then its tryin to tell me its not charging. There are also 2 8-10 gauge wires with fuses in them, coming off the regulator. they go to the back toward the rearend and then stop. One is brown and the other blue.(used to have a cab?) Dont know what they are for. we have recently purchased this tracotr and the batteries used to be next to the engine. Is there another way I can test the system other than by what the book says? Sorry about the long post...any help is GREATLY appreciated!!!

The charge indicator lights are known to short out internally. I have no idea if you have other problems, or not, but the wire is no doubt frayed inside the light socket, or the fiber washer has rotted out, or the spring that maintains contact with the bulb has rusted and broken, shorting out the lamp socket.

Slap a Volt meter on those batteries and fire it up. If your voltage while running is higher than it was just sitting there then your charging system is working despite the fried idot light wire. Your kind of thinking in your kind of situation will surely lead you down the wrong path and very quickly too. Use tools like Volt meters to know once and for all what voltages you have and where they are at.

Almost impossible to say what happened since I'm not psychic - you are going to need somebody on it with hands on experiance with both a Volt meter and those old wiring systems.
