My mother (78 years old) is about to sell my father's 1960 John Deere tractor (420 I think) with manual and hay mower, plough, front end loader, and disc (all similar vintage) to a rather shady dealer --- everything works though its a bit on the dirty side --- could someone give me a ball park figure as the value of this equipment. Thank you.

JD stopped making the 420 in '58 so if it's a '60 it sounds like a 430. Post the complete serial #, that will help value it. Some models are worth more than others. At any rate don't let your mother get ripped off. My 2 cents HMan

If they are going to try to take advantage of your 78 year old mother, don't think twice about intervening. There are lots of things worse than backing out of a deal when your getting ripped off, like being stupid enough to actually follow through on a bad deal. There may be some sour feelings, but they'll get over it.

these type arrangments with family members especially parents and or parent is difficult. I was left a tractor through my Dad's estate. Had spent several dollars on it. Decieded to sell however it was somewhat close to my Mom's memory of using. We made deal for sale and I split money with her. I would say your deal would be better served with a reserve and put the item on ebay auction. However if she's made a deal already, generally a deal is deal even if it's a bad deal. What's worse more than a bad deal is someone to crawfish on a deal.

I agree it's a bad thing to back out on a deal. however, there are too many vultures and scam artists out there attempting to take advantage of elderly folks. If the price is too far out of line I would consider nixing the deal. I would think the value has to be at least 3700 and a offer less than 3000 would be taking advantage if the tractor is in fair and usable condition. Another consideration, is who initiated this sale?

I agree with Bill. Plenty of scammers out there that wouldn't think twice about backing out of the deal if they found they were being had. Your Mom is completely within her rights to back out if in fact the guy's offered her much to low a price and she should have no guilty feeling's if in fact all is as it seem's?
