My uncle just purchased a 64 4020 diesel. I went over the other day to inspect it and found that the rear seal is out of the hyd pump. By looking at it I am not sure how to get the pump out of it for him as I had other projects to attend to that day. Does it go out the bottom, or do I have to pull the radiator out and take it out the top. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Deerejockey

You can take one of the plugs out of the top and find a pipe plug that will fit. put a hole through the pipe plug and a small cabe through it. Will allow you to lower the pump out from the top and lift it back in. Believe it is one of the valve plugs removed, could be one of the fittings as it has been a while since I took one out but the cabel definitely helps. as said below move front axle out of the way.

Yes, the imput shaft seal is what is out of it. I have to talk with my uncle because at this time I don't know if I will try to reseal it myself or purchase an exchange somewhere. I am getting a technical manual from a friend and I hope that if I reseal it that those shim spec's are in there. Thank you for all if the helpful information.

I assume you mean the front seal on the input shaft, not the rear seal. Easiest way to remove the pump is as you've already been told (remove the front axle and take pump from the bottom). The pump, at the input shaft has an external low-pressure seal which is where you will SEE the leak, and an internal high-pressure seal that will CAUSE the leak. So, changing the outside seal will not gain much. You have to disassemble the pump and replace the internal seal which is a four-sided seal, i.e. a quad-ring and Teflon backup washer. The "relief" oil hose that another respondent told you about is used to permit any residual leakage from the high-pressure seal to drain off and prevent blowing out the external low-pressure seal. Another factor to keep in mind is that the pump shaft is supported by adjustable Timken bearings on both ends and the end-play is adjusted with steel shims. Before taking the pump apart you should get a dial-indicator and measure the endplay. It should be around .002" but is likely to be looser from wear. If you don't tighten it up the seals won't last.

The easiest is to remove it from under the tractor, either remove the front axle or with a narrow front I've got by with turning the wheels all the way to one side and possibly removing one of the tires if has larger tires on it. And remove the mounting bracket/saddle with the pump. Also if it is an original pump that does not have a plastic line that runs from the lower side of the pump to the transmission case behind the battery box on the brake pedal side, replace the pump with one that does or see if anyone knows/or did drill&tap a fiiting for this 5/16 or 3/8 plastic line. Other wise it will still leak after you rebuild it, GUARANTEED!!

We took the pump out from the bottom. I think the manual tells how take it out from top. Good Luck.

the front axle should be removed or moved forward and the pump comes out the bottom.
