Howdy,

I'm in the process of looking for a disc to pull behind my john deere R. I was wondering what size of disc you fellas would suggest for her. Thanks as always for your help. God bless.

O-F-F

Around here: 8' on a Model 50
10' on a Model 60
12' on a Model 70
14' on a Model 80

I would place the R somewhere between the 70 and 80. You can draw your own conclusion.

How wide are your gates?

Now that you mentioned it, I wonder how many guys forgot to take that into consideration before buying wider impliments. BTW, we had a 13'6" disc that dad bought for a 730 gas and it handled it OK, I'd think the R ought to walk away with it.HJ

Never had that problem with a '49 A being the "big tractor". Sometimes the Allis-Chalmers '60' All Crop combine was a little tight in a 10' gate (or maybe a 12') I can't remember.

Also, the John Deere No. 200 pull-type picker was a little awkward getting through.

By the time my brother bought some big equipment and sold all the hogs, gates and fences weren't very important any more. As it turned out, he learned pretty quick that the hogs are what had made the farm profitable in the '50s and early '60s.

Well I have a 15 foot Wheel disk and it is a load for my Model 70 and it has just a little more hp than an R. I think 10 foot would be just about right. The only reason I bought this is that it was cheap, I would really prefer a smaller one. Russ

I would expect it to be related to what type of soil there is where you are located. I grew up in north central North Dakota and it was common there to pull a 14 ft tandem disk with an R. It handled it easily in 3rd gear which is fast enough to do a nice job.

Dad had a 13-1/2 ft Krause behind His R when He had it. 3RD gear only in stalk ground. Wasn't real fast but then My labor was cheap enough and the R was stingy on fuel. Never knew what it would do on that disk in plowed ground. 2ND gear only maybe? Tractor got sold before We were done plowing. It (the R) was kinda a dissappointment performance-wise.

old fashioned farmer,
I've got a 10' RW that I pull with my 60. The RW is a pretty sturdy unit and came in sizes up to 14'.
Good Luck!
