I have the opportunity to buy a '78 JD 2640 or a '75 ford 5000, which would be a better choice to work on a farm of 240 acers? Both tractors are sound and look good.

2640 is a far better tractor ,very nimble to drive ,5000 no where as easy to handle ,a lot heavier to steer.Deere is a younger tractor in age as well, every thing is much more operator friendly.

Parts and service availability is going to be far superior with the Deere. With yet another shake up at New Holland (they own Ford) with their merger with Case, it's hard to tell what parts support will be like for the older Ford tractors. I would stick with the Deere on those grounds alone.

Is it really true that Ol'e Abe finally won out over Cyrus, Henry, and Harry? Who's left in the front running now? JD, Agco, Case, and ?

No, Old Abe was the one that lost out, as New Holland is the principle player in the new company. Probably the saddest part for old tractor fans is that now IH is truly gone forever, as there is no mention of it at all in the new name. As a matter of fact, it's not even technically Case-New Holland, but simply CNH. The big three are now Deere, CNH and Agco.

The ford 5000 is a good tractor in either row crop or standard configuration. However, the 2640 is a realy nice chore tractor. The one we use in the summer turns 70 horse, and is very nimble, and a great little tractor. Around here the ford would bring around 6,000, and the deere around 10,000. If the units you are talking about are of equal shape, and close in price definately get the 2640. If the Ford 5000 is only half the price of the 2640, than you've got to ask yourself if the extra money is worth the extra HP, and better steering, and superior hydrolics. If the 5000 will do the job for you, and the extra HP is not important, than get the ford and the money you save can be put towards another purchase. But again, if it were my money and they were close in price, I'd get the Deere. Good Luck and have fun buying a tractor, Greg H.

What are you doing with the 240? hay? row crop? pasture?---GET YOURSELF A JOHN DEERE! Depending on a lot of use factors I would recommend a 2520, 3020, or 4020. There are a lot of these tractors for sale/ the 2520 being harder to find. Get one that has been recently overhauled by a dealership and you will never regret your purchase.

Both are pretty good tractors, but I would go with the 2640 mainly for one reason. As the larger thousand series [5000 and larger] get older the steering wears and you end up "following" the ford rather than steering it. Expensive and time consuming to rebuild. So at the very least I would test the steering out before I bought it.
