I am new to 2 cylinders, so bear with me. This is an A JD engine not running. If I disengage the clutch, I can lift/wiggle the clutch/belt pully quite a bit. When the clutch is engaged, the pully is solid it doesn't move up and down. Is this normal???

Thank you.

Jon

Jon, maybe?... The not being able to wiggle it with the clutch engaged is normal. Being able to move the clutch pulley latterly with the clutch disengaged is normal. Being able to move the pulley up & down just slightly with clutch disengaged is normal but not correct if the movement is more than just slightly. If you have a lot of vertical movement you probably have a worn pulley bushing or bearing.

Well, I guess that something is very worn. I can move the pully up and down quite a bit. I have an IT manual, but in the real world how long does it take to fix this type of problem?

Jon, there is no way to tell [guess] how long it will take. It depends on what kind of tools you have, how many you have done, how rusty/stuck the parts are, what you find wrong, & how long it takes to find parts. Oh! one other thing IF YOU BREAK ANYTHING WHEN PULLING IT APART..... ....

It could be a lot of things... but when I got my "50" it had the same problem. I disassembled the clutch and discovered that the pulley bearing had (apparently) seized some time in the past, and scored a 1/8" deep "ring" in the pulley bore. The bearing is supposed to be a press-fit but was moving a 1/4" total. I had a machine shop sleeve the bore to the original size and then I pressed a new bearing in.

That took care of MOST of the slop and vibration, but not all - the crank also has some wear (the bearing rollers ride directly on the crank surface). Fixing that would have required removing the crank to weld up and remachine the snout, which is obviously a lot more work!
