Hi again guys,
I did end up getting that clutch drive disc loosened up and off of the crankshaft. Well at least I know that it was good and tight on the crank and not worn! I think I have a good used one pinned down for about 1/3 of what mother deere wants for a new one.

Anyway, now that I'm that far I want to pack the clutch bearing with good grease. I am wondering what is the proper (or best) approach to removing it. At this point, I am looking at the crankshaft inside the clutch pulley with a (tin) bearing cover??? How can I get the bearing cover off without damaging it, or is there another way to do that. Or should the whole clutch pulley assembly be taken loose?

One other thing, is there any difference with the 520 and my 51 "B"? The clutch howls when the motor is running and clutch is disengaged. It need a re-packing more than anything else. Just need to know if it is the same procedure as the 520 or at least similar.

Thanks
Tyler

T.I.M., I'm not sure if this post is directed to Frank [F-I-T] or not? If it is you can just disregard my reply..
~On that 520, to get that pulley bearing out with the least amount of damage you will have to remove the clutch fork bearing [that's the 4 bolt rectangular cover on the front of the 1st reduction cover] then pull the clutch fork out the front, then pull the pulley off the crankshaft, then drive the pulley bearing out from the rear with a long drift or rod.
~Before pulling the pulley, try lifting it up & down to check for bearing to crankshaft play [not that you can do much about it on the 520 do to the fact that the bearing rollers ride directly on the crankshaft on the 520].
~While the pulley is off, clean out the pulley oil return holes & inspect the clutch operating parts for wear. If there is a lot of wear on the operating sleeve pin or pin hole in the sleeve now would be a good time to install an oversized pin & tighten that up a little [if the operating sleeve isn't held in one spot & kept from rotating the clutch won't snap in correctly].
~Seeing as you are installing a new clutch driver make sure to set the clutch fork stops correctly as that controls the fork position & how the clutch disengages & how the pulley brake operates [theres a pin & shims on the early 520 & 2 clutch fork stop bolts on the late 520]. To set that pulley fork stop correctly you really should have a service manual or let us know the serial number of your tractor so we can talk you through the adjustment.
~If the inner pulley bushing is worn & loose now would be a good time to replace that also. If its installed with a good fitting driver you wont have to ream it after installation.
~Probably the best thing to do is pull the pulley off & look it over then post back with questions

Mr. Clooney, Where are the "pulley oil return holes" you mentioned above (in the primary case or pulley assembly)? My books are with the tractor and I am not.

You see, I have been reading Tyler's post regarding his clutch with great interest since I have to get the pulley off my friends 520 in the near future. It has started to throw a lot of gear oil onto the hood and while sitting, it makes a large puddle under the pulley.

This tractor was restored by a so called professional in Ohio who sandblasted the tractor without properly covering the pulley. I pulled the pulley cover off and the inside is just full of sand and crud. I figure the sand has finally started to get inside the primary case and hurt the oil slinger or plugged something.

Thanks, Eric

Eric, the pulley oil return holes are in the pulley hub behind the bearing.
~You might want to check the transmission oil level to see if that is overfull due to the power-trol leaking into the trans.

The fluid levels were the first thing I checked. Thankfully they were fine and there was no water in the bottom of the cases. I'll get at it and check those oil return holes. Thank You.
