Dead Deere (4020 gas)

After pushing some snow and running out of gas I went to restart the 4020. The first try yieled a running tractor for about a 2 count. The second try yielded the starter staying engaged even after turning the switch off and removing it. It turned the engine over very slow until it died.

I had this once before. I tried jumping the solenoid with my pliers and there was no response. Since the battery was seemed a little weak I tried to jump it and that resulted in the battery cable ends getting very hot on the tractor side.

When you turn the switch on the dash lights come on, but I also do not have any headlights.

The battery is fairly new. Can there be and how would I find if there was a short in the system? Good thing I brought home an IH 460 Saturday as it that pulled the 4020 home today (with the bucket full of snow still in the 4020 and the road covered white).

Any advice is welcomed. THanks.

Any help would be appreciated.

Push the 4020 in a ditch and keep the 460!

A little trick to help start gasser when ran out of fuel or is starting hard. My Dad showed me this. Unhook the air intake hose from the carb. Close choke and with glove on hand, close off air intake on carb with hand and crank. Tractor almost always start after coulple of cranks. Might not be right, but it works. Watch for backfire. Never had a problem.

You guys are awfully touchy about a JD being towed by red one. My preferences run to Deere too but I think you should lighten up.

Keith, you might also need to clean your battery terminals.

What/where is the "bashing board"?

No, it's just that when someone blames something for not working, when the reason it's not working is that persons neglect, than I think they loose the right to complain about it. Besides I wasn't the one who bragged about the Farmall pulling the deere Home. Besides I like the older Farmall's and if I can ever find a good 560d that I can afford to restore, than I'm definately going to buy one. But you know what, if I ever run out of fuel while working with it and I have to tow it home with my Deere, I'm not goint to the IH board and complain about that darned 560. Even, if I did do something like that, I certainly wouldn't admitt it.

There is a bashing board at:
Link

it is a mostly CASE board where they call JD people "Deeroid"!

As you will notice, I can't actually post the website URL for you because a certain proprietor of this site does not allow simple courteopus information of that sort to be posted here. Go figure! Perhaps if you send a message to the proprietor of YT, she'll explain to you why it is impossible for her to permit the courtesy of allowing you to find out about another site. I'm very sure she'll be glad to explain it!

OR, If you can find CASEPOWER's E-mail address, he'll tell you what it is---it's his site!

Like mentioned before, if you run these old girls dry, they sometimes become hard to start, especially if you don't have a good battery to grind,or an electrical system that hasn't been maintained. It definately sounds like your starter is sticking, and needs taken off and serviced or rebuilt. Personally my 4020 has never let me down. Oh there have been a couple times when I've failed to replace needed parts or not maintained the electrical system, and it has come back to bite me in the forms of hard or not starting, cracking and not running right. {My fault} not the tractor. After I took time to fix up my tractor, I have a darn reliable 36 year old machine, that I can use day or night, no matter how cold it gets. Seems as though you might be putting down your tractor, when in reality, you haven't done your job in taking care of it. You need to replace old rotten cracked wiring, and possibly it's starter. God forbid filling it up with fuel, which by the way will cut down on condinsation, and make your gasser run better. My dad always told me that it cost the same to keep them full as it does empty. If you don't like the deere than sell it, and go ahead enjoying the wonderful hydrolics that your 460 farmall have to offer you, in your snow removal process. Sorry if we are being alittle rude, but my threshold for ignorance seems to be alittle low today.
Later, Greg H.

I have two answers for you.

The first, assuming this was an honest question (doubtful) answer is that these JD gas tractors sometimes have a difficult time restarting when you run them dry. It seems like there is an air bubble in the carb or something. The last time I ran my 3020gas dry, it had to be restarted. Also, once when someone syphoned gas from the tractor (@$$*& thieves) and the small amount of remaining gaas became contaminated, I had to drain and refill the tank. Same thing happened.

Pull start the gas 4020 if it wont relite after running the tank dry, ok? Grinding away on the starter, continuously, until the battery weakens is asking for overheating in the starter and associated electrical cables.

The second answer: I saw this "Q" on the bashing board and it seemed appropriate for a board that specializes in inflamatory arguments. It belongs over there, as the angry responses it will get are appropriate for the bashing board. HERE, it makes you look like a fool! After all, YOU ran your tractor out of gas and THEN took a poor choice of operating technique in response. Cheer up! At least you DIDN'T forget to put gasoline in the 460!

First, it was an honest question.

Second, thanks for the advise I did get.

Third, my green count to my red and prairie gold is 4:1. I like old tractors and find each has interesting designs and uniques parts. I'v had issues with all, but enjoy them all the same.

Four, my red friends gave me a lot of crap about the 460 diesel as "they don't start in 80 degree F (for those that nit pick) during the summer". So I thought throwing in the 460 was not bashing a deere, but saying not all tractors are as bad as what some lead to believe. I suppose if I had mentioned my Dodge didn't pull the 4020 you'd be calling me a Ford or Chevy basher....by the way I am not a Chevy fan, but the Isuzu with Allison tranny is a nice set up and before the Dodge I owned Ford and still think thye are good.

Five, I deceided to take the high road here. You figure out what I'm thinking. Everyone has one..... ..... ..... .....
