Im restoring a 1943 john deere b. when i took it apart it had water in the oil so i cleaned up the cylinder walls so no visable cracks. sent the head out forvalves and mag tested it came back good. I then put it all together after hmmm 30 years of not running. and luckly she fired right up. I ran it for about an hour watching my water i lost about an inch out of the radiator. I didnt think much about it until i went back to the shed to re-fire it and found 3 gallons of water in the oil thats about 1 gallon an hour leak I then disasembled it again I pressure tested the oil sleave that goes through the block and the head found nothing being my first time project i guess im stuck and have no clue what to do next. and info would be helpful

I called Detweilers, they advertise in the Green Magazine and Two-Cylinder magazine. I was asking the same thing.

i want to thank you all for your help and i will try these things I do have a broken valve guide at the end but the guy at the shop told me that it wasnt hurting anything. I didnt spay anything on the head gasket because john deere said i didnt need to.I was going to use a copper spray but didnt. I think and i could be wrong that the head gasket was ok. I didnt find any source of water in the cylinders and after i found all the water in the oil i opend up the pet cocks and turned over the flywheel to check for water and she fired right up.I willo check valve guides and rod guides when i get home tonightany other idea would be greatly appreciated

T Ely, as mentioned below the push rod tubes are about the first place to look [very common leak area]. If nothing found there suspect the head gasket [did you use sealer on the gasket & re-torque the head after hot?]

My rule of thumb for 2 cylinders with water going through is, first check the valve guides, and if that doesn't work check valve guides again. Good luck dave

You can see if the tubes are leaking by taking the cover off the block and use a trouble light and mirror. That much water will be easy to spot.

Did the place that did the head replace the push-rod tubes? More than likely it is leaking there if they didn't. Pull off the valve cover. The two center push-rods go threw tubes that are put in the head. Fill it up with water and see if any water starts to run from the push-rod tube holes.
