Recently my 4020 pto lever lost all feeling of resistance. I can not feel it engage or disengage at all and the pto wont work. The pto has not been used in a couple of years. Is there anyway to free it up or pump grease somewhere? I'm triying to avoid having to avoid a costly repair (split tractor) for something so minor.

From what I know about them, one of the guys was correct in checking the shear pin first. This was a common problem with the 4010's.

this shear pin is visible from under the tractor through the inspection plate?

Remove the panel under the steering wheel (directly underneath the ether injector) 3/8 inch cap screw with 9/16 inch head. First check the roll pin where the PTO lever is pinned to horizontal shaft; if moving the lever causes the shaft to rotate, next look inside (where you've removed the panel) to check the linkages there. If vertical shaft is moving, do as G-man suggested (will take two people.....one to move PTO lever and one to shine flashlight up into clutch housing (ENGINE OFF)..... your problems are probably not gonna be this simple and easy to fix, but it's where I would start looking..... .

Grab a flashlight, pull the inspection cover off the bottom of the clutch housing and check to see what is or isn't moving when the PTO lever is operated. That should narrow the problem down considerably.

JE,on '68 model the pto is engaged by pushing a brg against 3 fingers to put pressure on pto clutch.I hate to tell but it is possible that the end of fingers have been ground off.If so splitting tractor is only way to fix it.Check linkage under dash to be sure it is connected.Jim B

Given the circumstances you've described, I'd first check the linkage(s) for a sheared roll pin..... .

Older (1968), synchronized, standard tread tractor (not row crop)
