Will the clutch in the gas model work with a 404 diesel engine? I am getting ready to convert to a diesel and I am wondering if the clutch will work and if so should I replace it anyhow. It has 4000 hours on it but I have heard the perma clutch will last dang near forever.

I won't be so bold as to tell you what to do with YOUR tractor, but I would tend to agree with the others. You have a rare tractor there that should easily be worth enough to buy a very nice 4230 diesel, which will be a much more versatile and efficient tractor for day to day farm work.

because the gasser is so rare of a fine unit. Advertise your fine unit is some collector magazines and then buy yourself a diese.

Don't you DARE ruin that extremely rare gas 4230 by taking out the gas and putting in a diesel. They are amongst the rarest Deeres ever made, only about 30 of them were made. Would you give an original Babe Ruth baseball to some kids to use in a sandlot game? Sell it to a collector and buy a diesel 4230, there are lots of them around. It will be easier and you may make a profit besides.

The gas model is rare, might be worth something to a collector, why don't you buy one with a Diesel, they are not too hard to find.....

When this series first came out there were some problems with the perma clutch plates. JD did a change over and I don't know that I have heard of one wearing out. Not sure about the gas to diesel question, I would check with the JD dealer to see what is listed in the parts books. Have never seen a gas model in our area.
