JD 60, we took the dash out to fix a shifter problem. There is one wire left that we do not know where to put it back on the dash. It goes to the back of the starter. There is already one hot wire from the starter to the ammeter guage that provides juice to everything. Would this wire also go to the ammeter guage to take juice back from the generator to the battery through the starter? The generator has not worked for awhile and the wiring is different from the manual. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dear AG, If your tractor has a ballast resistor in its ignition circuit (does it????? ???) there should actually be 2 wires that lead from the starter motor up to near the dash. One of them is always HOT and is actually atatched to the starter post where the big battery cable is and it goes to the high
(supply) side of the ammeter and feeds your lights and ignition etc. If it has a ballast resistor and the start by pass circuit which some 60's do, the other wire near the starter is supposed to atatch to the small little side terminal out the side of the starter push switch. That wire is hot ONLY when the starter switch is depressed and its purpose is to by pass the ballast resistor and feed full battery voltage to the coil durign starting. If thats where that wire is indeed connected at the starter, it should lead to either the load (other side which ignition switch is wired to) side of the ballast resistor or direct to the coils high (non distributor) side. I will e mail you a general wiring diagram and another problem may be that some farmers when they replaced a starter switch didnt buy the correct one with the extra little side terminal used to by pass the ballst at starting. Look and see if your starter switch has that small side terminal and if theres a wire attached to it. If so, test and see if its hot only when the start switch is depressed, and if it is, wire it to either the coils high (non distributor) side or the load (non from switch) side if the ballst which is the same electrical point as the coil.

I hope this helps so let us know which start switch you have (one with lil side terminal) and if that wire leads to it, and if you have a ballast resistor, and Im sure we can get you wired corectly.

PS I can e mail or give you more generator troubleshooting tips later if needed.

God Bless the USA

AGR538, if you have a late 60 my guess would be it runs from the starter switch [small by-pass terminal] to the distributor side of the ballast resistor. On the late 60 there is a by-pass starting system that runs battery power directly to the distributor side of the ballast resistor during cranking.
~If you don't have a ballast resistor [should be mounted on the front lower steering support casting] that wire then becomes a mystery & might have been added for some other reason as it isn't production. ~Look at the starter switch on the starter & see if it has a 2nd small post, if it does & that wire is hooked to that small terminal then that wire definitely went to the ballast resistor [distributor side]...

Thanks guys. That is exactly what I needed to know. I hope it feels good knowing you helped someone you don't even know so many miles away. We spent 2 hours trying to figure this out the other night.

AGR538, as you found out it's usually the simple things that cause the most aggravation. You will find that most things only fool you once then you remember it for a long time. After everything in life has fooled you at least once you are then called an expert [if you aren't too old by then to remember what you are working on]....
