What would be the best way to weld the cast iron piece of the wide front end that mounts to the tractor. I am buying a A with a wide front end that is broken and I can't afford another one right now. Any ideas or any has anyone had to weld or have one welded?

Thanks

when you weld cast iron use nickle rod.

I forgot to mention that I have a heavy loader on mine and carry a lot of round bales with it. It has held up well after welding.

The '41 AW that I grew up on was welded when we got it at an auction in about 1954, and it never gave a bit of trouble. Welding cast iron nowadays is easier with the rods that they have available.

Thanks guys!!

I was afraid that the stress would be too much for that to be welded. You gave me great hope. Praise the Lord and thank you.

I've welded head's , blocks & the same piece your talking about. I use a COLD weld, meaning I only weld just a little at a time let it cool than do it again A froze out head may take several days. The old timer that taught me said never get the cast hot enough you can't put your thumb with in 3/4 in from the weld You need other jobs going at the time so you don't hurry the welding Hope that helps Larry

I had the center casting welded on my A about 6-7 years ago. The shop here that does that kind of fix put the thing in an oven and heated it completely before welding, then after the welding was done, they put it back in the oven and let it come down to normal very gradually. It seemed to work out and has not given me any grief.

Black Creek

My experience on getting cast welded is to take it to a shop that does this kind of welding on a routine basis. I have had the cast welded on the center front axel piece on my 420 and the weld looked like it was done on steel.

In general terms, usually some kind of nickle rod is used.

I have also had the transmission case repaired and the weld was good, professional looking, and no leaks.

However, I cannot give you any do it yourself details.
