I have a 1952 JD60 with a duplex DLTX81 carb. I was following the cleaning instructions and when I tightened the sump plug back in it broke out the botton of the cast body of the carb. I have talked to the folks at Roberts Carburetor Repair in IA and looked at a used rebuilt carb on this site. Would there be any real advantage to repairing mine or getting a rebuilt one from this site? I gotta move quick. It's getting close to planting time. Please help, Eric

Eric,

I do not have any experience with re-built carbs from YT Mag so I can't give you an opinion of them. I can tell you that Robert's and Burrey's both do GREAT work!
Doug Burrey will usually work with you if you need a quick turnaround (and Robert's may very well too). Doug reently overhauled my DLTX81 off my 60 and did a GREAT job at a reasonable price with a quick turnaround.
If you'd like to tackle the job yourself, take Clooney's advice and do some searching on this board and/or check out the videotapes Robert's sells that address the overhauling of Deere carbs.
Here's the website for Burrey's and Robert's:

www.burreycarb.com
www.robertscarbrepair.com

Good luck!

Al in Iowa

Thanks VO5, All I needed was some reliable feedback on Roberts. I'm not ready to tackle yet. I don't even know how to plow. All things in good time. Thanks again, Eric

Eric, at least you know what you have with yours. There are a lot of so-called re-builds out there that are not done very good. There is always the chance the bottom of the stem will break off a re-built at a later time if you have to pull the bowl on that carb. On a properly repaired stem the repair is much stronger than the original. The biggest problem with repairing your carb [or having it repaired] is turn-around time & some reputable places are backed up for weeks or even months..
~If you go with a rebuilt carb at least buy one from a rebuilder that has a good history of problem free carbs & comes with customer recommendations.

Clooney, would you consider a rebuilt from this site's "parts" list? Mine was working ok but does need some service to control my concern of gas in the oil. (or some kind of service to control that, I'm not yet sure if that is the real problem) Do you have any idea about the rebuilds on this site?

Eric, I can't answer your question as I do all my own carb work & haven't ever bought a rebuilt carb from this site, or anybody else for that matter. You will need to get feedback from the people that have bought rebuilt carbs to get credible advise on the quality from different vendors.
~If you have a little time on your hands you might want to use the search feature on this site & try CARB or FUEL LEAK or FLOAT or any number of other carb related words to read some of the past posts on the subject. I think you will start to see a trend on who was happy with what....
