Model 50 Burning Oil at Slow Idle Only

I've got a 1953 model 50 that seems to want to smoke at slow idle speeds. At fast idle it runs fine. The smoke definitly smells like burning oil (instead of a rich mixture).

Any ideas?

John, if it only happens at a real low idle & not at a normal [factory] idle speed or other engine speeds I would suspect a rich mixture due to carb air flow being too low to meter fuel correctly & a cool combustion chamber. Most 2-cylinder Deere's go pretty rich when idled below 500 RPM's. ~Try turning the idle mixture screws in some when at low idle & see if it clears up [my guess is it will].
~If the smoke is actually blue & not black you might want to suspect a failing ventilator pump

Could be worn intake guides. At idle, intake manifold vacuum is at its maximum. That tends to pull oil vaporsthru the worn valve guides and mix them with the air/fuel mix. Remedy would probably be a new valve guides and valves. Wouldnt hurt to check to see if your crankcase vent isnt restricted also. That would be a simple fix.
