I have recently had my gas tank sealed and coated for my JD 620 and the float-lever that goes in the tank is very rusty and does not move. Is their a product that I can soak it in and get it free and movable?? Thanks

Mike:

I have taken those apart for repair. You have to drill out the two brass rivets in the top mounting plate. Then you can separate the two halves, and see what's going on. There is wire wound resistor (some very fine 30 ga.? maybe) nichrome type steel wire. Resistance is 0-30 ohms across the movement. The bushings are brass with a small copper wiper arm. So if it's that frozen up, there is likely a real problem in there. You will have to find some rivet's to use to reassemble.

Now the bad news, if that wire resistor has been overheated, it's probably broken, and I haven't been able to solder them. Since it's steel wire, it really needs to welded, and I don't know how you would go about that. I got some wire from a specialty wire house and rewound my own.

They are no longer available from Deere, but Nick Barbieri does offer original units as well as a universal unit that will work. His number is 516-221-4116 if you would like to contact him.

Mike, I have good luck with a product called PB Blaster to free up rusted parts. HOWEVER, if the float sensor assembly (sending unit) is badly corroded, even if you free her up so it goes up n down dependant on fuel level as it should, I wonder if the electrical integrity of the variable resistor circuit is still operative????? ?? What's supposed to happen is the electrical resistance of the sending unit changes as its contactor changes position on that variable resistor wire. (up or down as fuel level changes) If you get her free of rust and she moves up and down and the float has no leaks, be sure and atatch an ohmeter to it and see if its resistance varies smoothly as the float is moved up and down.

Good luck n God Bless the USA Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana
