Someone give me a 2 spool hydraulic valve i would like to use on my 45 loader. Is there a way to tell if this is an open or closed center valve. Thanks Chris

You can't tell just by looking at it. If it is a Gresen valve, SP,SPK, or SSK series, the "out" side can be set up for open center, closed center, or closed center with power beyond. All the same valve, but how the plugs are set up is what makes it one way or the other.

I also have the books on Cross valves, and Char Lynn. Let me know what you have and what is in the out side of the valve and which hole has the plug and I will look it up for you.

Chris:

If the valve(s) flows clear through when in neutral, I think that is called open center. That way the fluid is flowing through all the time, and when you move a valve it directs the oil at once.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will set me straight.

right, just blow air in the pressure port, if air exits freely from the tank port, then it's an open center valve. in closed center valve air flow will be bloked.
btw, pressure port is on the end with the relief valve, usually marked 'p'.

You can blow air through a Valve that is set up as a closed center if it also has the power behond plug, but the air is going through the power behond port, not the valves. Also the PSI needs to be set at 1350 PSI. Gresson Valves come from the factory aset at 2000 PSI and can only be set down to 1500 PSI. Close enought for a 2 banger. We have had the Gresson valve on our 630 with a 35 loader since 1978 with no proublems. We have a CROSS valve on our 430 Crawler and that also comes from the factory set at 2000 PSI. To get to 1000 PSI for the crawler we had to change out the relive valve.
