THANKS FOR YOUR POINTERS, MY SITUATION NOW IS MY MAG FIRES ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE ON LH CYLINDER AT TDC. THE RH CYLINDER FIRES ON THE EXHAUST STROKE. I BOUGHT THE MAG (WICO AP477) FROM A LONG TIME REBUILDER. IS THERE SOMETHING THAT I AM NOT SEEING? ALL THE OTHER THINGS YOU ASKED ME TO LOOK AT SEEM TO BE IN ORDER. THANKS AGAIN.

Dear MDM, if you say your RH cylinder is firing on its exhaust stroke, that occurs 540 degrees after the LH has fired. If thats so, then another 180 later, LH would again fire. (Total 720 degree cycle) Therefore, it sounds to me like the plug you have wired to the right cylinder should be firing the left cylinder, and then 180 later, the other terminal would fire the right cylinder as its supposed to (RH fires at its TDC Power Stroke 180 after LH). If your mag is installed 180 out and the AP fires BOTH TDC's like the C or XH, a wire reversal would make her run. Or, if you remove the mag and rotate the flywheel 180 and put the mag back (dont turn it in meantime) it will run. If a wire reversal or 180 mag rotation dont cure her, let us know, the AP may not fire same as the C or XH.

God Bless the USA John T Nordhoff

John, reversing the Mag 180 will cause the L/H cylinder to fire on the exhaust so that won't help, & just reversing the wires will also cause the L/H cylinder to fire on the exhaust so that won't gain anything. He will have to change both the mag 180 & swap the wires to gain anything with that AP. I'm thinking he has the mag installed 180 out & also has the wrong cap tower running to the L/H plug. Or if that doesn't get it to fire correctly the CCW mark on the drive gear might not be positioned correctly..

Cloney, That could do it for sure. His mag needs to be set up and fire so one terminal fires his left plug and then the other terminal fires the right cylinder one 180 later, the the 540 coast cycle. The way his is now, is that his one terminal fires and the other one 540 later, then the original one 180 later (total 720 degree cycle), which yields the same affect as reversed wires. If his left plug was attached to that terminal thats on the right now, and the other terminal fired 180 later (as it appears its doing) thats how it should be acting IF THE MAG IS NOT 180 OUT, but he may indeed have the wrong cap PLUS be 180 out ????? ????? ???

Anyway, Im sure given more info we can get him up n running. Is it warmign up there in Michigan yet???? Ol John T

John, the mag is definitely out 180 & the wires are also on the wrong cap towers, the only problem is figuring out which direction the mag is out. Just doing it in my head I believe the impulse coupling needs to be turned clockwise [looking at the impulse cup end] 180 then the wires also swapped in the cap. Just reversing the mag 180, or only swapping the wires won't get it to fire both cylinders on the compression stroke. [even the direction the mag is moved 180 will make a difference]
~Probably the best way for him to be sure it's correct is to first swap the wires in the cap, then rotate the engine until the L/H plug fires [that will probably be somewhere around BDC on the L/H cylinder], then pull the mag straight out, then rotate the engine until the L/H cylinder is on compression & the flywheel L/H impulse lines up with the case mark, then re-install the mag & adjust it to trip as the L/H impulse mark lines up with the case mark. ~It was about 75 here in Michigan yesterday but it's supposed to rain the remainder of the week...

I agree and think were gettign there. The firing so one fires, then the other 180 later on their power strokes, which is what his now right then what he has left would be okay (looks like what he has wired to his right fires 180 before what he has wired to his left to me), but a simple swap without a 180 reversal would put his left wanting to fire on its exhaust stroke it looks like. Im sure once we know how his terminals and cap are set up we can get him up n running. Fun thread we got going here. Take care friend. Ol John T

John, yes, the mag has to swap 180 & the wires have to swap towers, the problem is, if the mag is turned 180 the wrong way he will have both sides firing on the exhaust stroke & not on compression.... It should be pretty easy to figure out by looking at the mag, the mag towers are 90 apart on that AP & the L/H side must fire first, so the leading cap tower must go to the L/H side, The problem is, I can't remember what direction the distributor disk turns in that AP, I'm pretty sure it turns counter to engine rotation [the rotor disk rotation direction must be known to know what tower is the leading tower].....

MDM, what plug wire tower on the cap do you have running to the L/H side. It sounds like you might have the mag 180 off & the wrong cap tower running to the L/H plug.
~Let me know how it's wired & we'll go from there..
