I have a 1956 420 that gas runs out of the carburetor at idle. I could not find an aftermarket rebuild kit locally. I went to the nearest JD dealer and purchased, the appropriate gasket set, needle @seat. They told me kits are no longer available. Last fall I had purchased a manual (# SM2019 JD 420 Series tractors) at the JD dealer that is an inch thick and set me back a little over $100. I opened the manual and the only thing it says under carburetor section is refer to service manual No. SM-2013, Model 40 series tractors
Could someone who has this manual please help me out by sending me an e-mail or fax of this section. If you want to fax it, send me an e-mail and I will send you a fax number.

Thanks in advance,
Lou

I get needles and seats from JD,probably get
10 sets a year,they have them in stock.They
cost around $13.00,that's usually the problem,
no use buying stuff you don't need.I haven't had
much luck at napa ,mostly teenagers that don't
know anything.I know the headlight bulbs I priced
for a 430 were cheaper at JD.

Thanks for the help guys. I went to a different NAPA store. The guy behind the counter was more than willing to help. He even made a photo copy of the instructions so I could use the parts I bought from JD. Now I will be able to take this carb apart set the float level and install the new needle and seat. I guess I will be driving the extra 30 miles to get to this NAPA store and quit spending my money at the local store. They just told me they didnt carry tractor parts when I asked for the carb kit.

the John Deere carburator manual is SM-2024. I've found the best place for parts is Robert's Carburators.

Lou

Any NAPA worth their salt stocks a kit also. If you run into any special requirements not in the kit Robert's Carburetor has about any widget you may need for ole Mr Marvel.

Lou, I have the SM-2013, Model 40 service manual & all it has is a small section on carb removal & initial adjustment. It refers you to section 60, group 25 of the Tractors & Engines (general) Unit & service manual for complete information. The manual that it refers to is I believe SM-2000 [it doesn't give the manual reference number but the Tractors & Engines (general) Unit & service manual is SM-2000 ] .... I also have the SM-2000 general manual but it is so old & fragile I have no way of getting it in my scanner without damage to it.
~This is one of those Deere catch 22 situations as the SM-2000 doesn't actually cover the 420 carb but does generally cover the TSX-245, 356, 237. The Deere TSX-641, TSX-688, & TSX-678 on the 420 are very similar but not exactly the same so even the SM-2000 won't give you exact details.....

Lou, if gas is running out, you still have a needle and seat problem or a float problem. Make sure the float does not have gas in it, and is set 1/4 inch above the body gasket. Sometimes the wire clip on the needle will cause it to hang up, usually I just take it out. Carquest has the carb. kit the part number is 1305. You get gaskets, needle & seat, throttle shaft seals, air screw, ect. Cost is about $18 also you get an exploded diagram of your carb. with instructions. Sometimes the needle and seats you get nowadays are not too good. Try putting the old one back in it or another new one, if removing the wire clip does not help.
