I have just purchase a 1951 John Deere B I don't have any books yet but was trying to get the 3 point working. There is a lever to the left of the seat that seams to work the hydraulics but the 3 point arms don't move. Were do I start. Thanks

David:

Simplest things first.

The PTO has to be turning in order for the pump to pump oil for the rockshaft arms. This means the clutch pulley must be turning so that the PTO shaft turns.

I don't remember if a '51 "B" has a Hi/Lo shifter, but if it does, the PTO lever is the smaller one beside that (kind of down by towards the distributor/magneto area). If no hi;lo shifter, it's the only lever to the right of the transmission quadrant. To engage the PTO, move this lever to the left (it should move about an 1/8 turn). Start engine in neutral, and engage the clutch. With the pulley turning, and the PTO lever in the engaged position, the power take off should be turning. Now with the Pow-R-Trol lever in the forward position, the rockshaft arms should raise. They go down by gravity, so if they are already up, you may not see them move. With an implement or you, standing on one of the arms, move the Pow-R-Trol lever to the rear. The arms should drop.

If not, we move to less simple causes such as not enough oil in the system, or wrong blocking tips in the P-trol box.

BTW, do you have a cylinder hooked to the tractor ? Because it will not work the lift arms and a cylinder at the same time.

Post back your results.

There is no cylinder attached. No Hi/Low shifter.PTO is engaged, With the lever forward you can hear noise as if the pump is working. If you leave the lever forward it will start to lug the engine. The arms are down but I can lift them and it feels like they are spring loaded to go down and drop if you let go.The Pump was out of oil when I got the Tractor but after filling acts as if it works. There is a fitting that I think is for the hyd. cylinder line that was plugged with a bolt and leaked I replaced with a pipe plug. Hope this helps
Thanks David

David, you have to have the correct PLUGS in the rear of the power-trol valve body. The correct plugs will have OPEN fronts. If the plugs you have now have a bolt in them they are probably remote cylinder supply fittings & those will have CLOSED front ends that will block off the rockshaft operation....

Sounds like this could be my problem. I am unsure of what you are telling me about the plugs. When I got the tractor there was a fitting on (from the rear)the right lower corner it is a female JIC fitting that should connect to a hose. There was a bolt on the fitting and when I put fluid in it sprayed out. I then put in a pipe plug that stopped the leak.I'm not sure what plugs with OPEN Fronts are.
Thanks David

David:

"Open" front plugs are just that, open like a soda straw.

"Closed" ones are blocked off, i.e. solid nosed. No oil could flow into them thru the end.

< "Open" front plugs are just that, open like a soda straw.

So this would be like a pipe nipple with a pipe cap on it?

< "Closed" ones are blocked off, i.e. solid nosed. No oil could flow into them thru the end.

And then this would be a standard square headed, solid pipe plug? Sorry, new terminology to me...perhaps we're not talking pipe fittings?

Lee, what Frank & myself are talking about are the Power-trol adapter plugs in the R/H rear of the P/T valve body. If they are closed in the front & open in the rear with pipe threads they direct P/T oil only to the remote cylinder. If they are open in the front they direct oil to the internal rockshaft cylinder....

I sure want to thank! You guys for the help. I wasn't sure of what you were talking about but with the info I got from You 2 I looked the tractor over with a different view and after taking the fittings out I could then understand.
Seems my tractor has one open and one closed plug, must have been using a one way cylinder. I have locate the piece I need.
Again Thanks for the help I'm just getting started so am sure I will need more!
