Need your opinion on what i should do. The tractor is a 43 B with standard size pistons. I have the motor tore apart and at the machine shop. The bore is aproximatley .030 over in the front(near head) and around .010 in the back of the cylinder. My machinist said that they did not make and oversize piston for this year B and said that he couldn't find any aftermarket ones either. What do you think about putting the std size pistons in and new rings? Would i have a problem with blow by. The tractor wont be used hard just for shows and maybe get a load or two of firewood a year. Akso is it true that jd std size rings are .010 over?

Thanks Aaron

Aaron, that is an awful lot of bore wear in the front for a new ring to survive.
~The proper way to handle that wear problem is with an over bore & new oversized pistons.
~If you call around you should be able to find larger pistons.
~If you just can't find any pistons or are on a very limited budget you can re-measure the cylinder bore at the top of the bore where the # 2 ring stops & if the wear is within reason there just install the new top ring in the # 2 piston ring groove & leave the top ring groove open. ~If the wear is just about as bad at the # 2 ring area you really should bore it & sleeve it or bore it & install oversized pistons.
~Even if you sleeve it, with that kind of [.030"] bore wear at the top I bet you will find the old piston has real excessive ring side clearance in the top groove.

That is funny, I have a 43B with cast iron John Deere pistons in it that are 45 over. Deere still has pistons available for my 43A and 49G. I don't know if they still have 45 over for the B left. But give it a check.

We also, are working on one of these. JD dosn't show any size pistons for this serial no. B, nor can we find anything after market. We have decided to sleeve the block and use our .045 cast pistons.

If you don't want to spend or have alot to spend,I would knurl the pistons and install .045 rings that are fitted to the bore by filing the ends to give you proper clearance.

Looking in my books your"B" should be 4 1/2 in.bore. I think Jerry Hinrichs has a rebore kit for that give him a call at 815-778-1900 or 815-499-6580. .030 wear is a lot of wear.Earl
