I got my old 44 B to fire up and run today!!! I haven't got the hood on or the tires fixed, I strapped the little gas tank on with a couple of tarp straps and ran a plastic line to the carb to make it work, but what a sweet sound to hear it run!! My question is, how can I get it to start easier, I cranked my a** off to get it to fire, will advancing the timing make it start easier and if so which way will advance it, top of mag forward? thanks for your help you guys have helped me a lot. :<)

Scott, the top of the mag is rotated forward to retard the timing & to the rear to advance the timing. ~Unless the timing is way off it usually doesn't effect the starting that much. ~Make sure the mag impulse is snapping when the flywheel is rotated in the starting direction. If the timing is correct the impulse should snap as the L/H impulse on the flywheel lines up with the case mark [at 3 o'clock behind he flywheel]..
~Make sure you are getting a blue spark that will jump a 3/16" gap [poor spark is a big factor in hard starting]..
~Make sure the choke is closing & the carb is functioning correctly.
~Adjust the idle needle to be 2 turns out from seated, & adjust the load needle to be 1 turn out from seated to see if that helps the starting.

See the post above about "Timing 36 B". If your magneto is properly serviced and has a good snap, this should set the timing properly.
