Have a late styled A with two tanks that I thought was a All-Fuel; however, the serial number falls in the range for gas only[661442]Should both fuel caps be green, or still paint the small tank cap red? Any opinions, Scott

Scott,

J.R.Hobbs tells us that for a period of time in 1950, Deere was offering the purchaser of a gasoline Model A the option of having the all-fuel hood with two tanks so that the farmer had enough gasoline to make it to the lunch hour without having to refuel. My guess is your tractor was one of those so equipped. My father owned such a tractor. Personally, I think all of the caps were painted green, but I'm sure that has been debated at length by others so I'll stay out of that one.

Scott:

Your "A" could well be an "All-fuel". Gasoline-only engines were indeed offered beginning with 584,000, but it was not the only engine option.

The distillate, all-fuel option continued to be made available for the two cylinders Deere's up to the end of their run in 1960.

All that said, if you have a "two-tank" tractor, the small tank cap, for gasoline, should be painted red, and the main distillate tank cap would be chassis green.

Hello Frank, A's sn655572-662728 were all 2 tank built w/the std. 14 gal large tank after that the A"s were equipped w/18 gal. tanks. The gasoline version had a #71 carb and a fuel tank heat shield while the allfuel had a #72 carb w/o heat shield. I have sn 657975 1n the rough, maybe some day! gwh
