Suddenly developed engine noise on my 4010 gasoline when I started it up. Fairly loud - metal to metal thumping / banging. I am unable to tell if coming from top/bottom/left/right of engine - it just sounds "deep internal". Engine starts, runs, and accelerates - but not smoothly and noise increases with RPM's. Suspected it was bearings - pulled oil pan - checked connecting rods - no excessive bearing play evident - no excessive metal pieces in oil. Plugs look like they are all firing. What should I check next?

Broken valve?

I changed the hydraulic pump coupling to the newer style like on a 4020 on mine. The original couplings on the 10 series make noise like a rod knocking but since you say the engine runs sluggish, this probably isn't what's making the noise.

I had the hard face on the bottem of a lifter come loose and it sounded just like a rod. Check the lifters before you get to far into the eng.

Maybe it could be a wrist pin. You could possibly try shorting out the spark plugs one at a time to see if the noise lessens or changes. If it came all of a sudden I wouldn't think it would be wrist pin unless something drastic happened.

Check coupler at front of crankshaft to hydraulic pump, and while your there, check the torsional damper.

A gas does not have a damper.
