60 John Deere, let it roll backwards down a hill a little ways, stopped and then put it in first gear. Engaged clutch and it did not go anywhere. Took it out of first and went into neutral. Tried to go to another gear and it will not go into another slot (or gear). So, it will go into first gear slot, will go into neutral, will not go into any other gear slot, and regardless of if it is in first slot or neutral will not go anywhere when clutch is engaged and it does not pull down the motor like it is stuck in between gears. Any help is appreciated.

My 730 does something similar to that. If on a hill it requires that you use the brakes to relieve the pressure on the transmission in order to get it out of gear. If mine gets in two gears I can always go back to my previous gear, relieve the pressure, and then take it out of gear, and then continue as normal. This may not be your problem at all, but it would be easier than taking the top off the transmission.

My model A will do that sometimes if you try to shift too rapidly. Only fix I have found is remove top of transmission and shift lever, slide all gears to neutral, reassemble and she is good as new!

AGR538, I have had the model 60 to do that. Seems a common problem with them. By it choking the motor down, means it is in 2 gears at once. You will have to take the top off the trans. and realign all the gears back to Neutral. Then just be careful and shift it slow when moving the lever from side to side, or it will do the same thing again. Wayne.

Sounds like shift lever popped out of forks, may have to take top off, your shift gear pattern and steering wheel pedistal; then realign all shift forks back to neutral, and put top back on;;; good luck Bill

Sounds to me like you are stuck in first and trying to put it into 2 gears at once. My suggestion would be to put it into first gear. Then with feet on the brakes take out of first and try and put it into another gear and then engage the clutch and see if it takes off. I have had the same thing happen to me and that usually fixes the problem, temporarily! Hope this helps

I don't think it is stuck in first because it will not move when I engage the clutch with the shifter rod in the first gear slot. It is almost like it is stuck in neutral but the shifter rod only goes into the first gear slot and no other slot.

Does it go into gear all the way or just part way? It has to be all the way in till it is touching the shifter quadrant. If not you are right it is in neutral. Rocking might help as well to get it all the way in gear.

I don't know. I will look again to make sure it is going all the way up. Thanks
