3020 carb problems

I have a JD 3020 gas, that fires up normally, but runs for 10-20 seconds, and dies. On the carb is a solenoid with a needle, threaded into the carb on the block side of the carb. The wire to this solenoid is hot, and has broken, being held by one strand, and if wiggled, arcs to the solenoid case. I assume this is my problem, in the tractor not running. My question is about what this solenoid is, and if it is needed? My brother seems to think this is just a gas cutoff and can be bypassed. My service manual shows two carbs, a Marvel-Shebler (sp) and a Zenith, neither of which show a powered solenoid needle. The carb is closer in appearance to the Zenith. I tried to upload a pic of this solenoid to the "help identify" pic section, with no luck. I will try to upload later again. Any comments on this, and if its needed, are appreciated.

My 1520 has a solenois shot off. This is in the operators manual.

Activating carburetor in electrical system fails.

Screw out and remove the carburetor load needle screw. Slide out the spring and load needle valve. Place spring on front end of needle valve and install parts. Turn screw down until just snug and back off two turns. This will hold the load needle open mechanically and will allow the engine to be operated.

The electric solenoid is used on 68 and later Zenith. It is both a fuel shutoff and load needle valve . For the cost it can be replaced with a plain load needle from an earlier model. Make sure to cover unused wire to prevent FIRE.

Although I'm not 100% sure, I do believe that is a fuel shut-off, and is likely causing your problem. If you can find a way to remove it and plug the hole to bypass it, it would probably be okay, as a new solenoid is $125. If there is only one strand of wire, try repairing the wiring before removing the entire unit, though, as one strand isn't going to carry enough juice to open the solenoid. You could also consider switching to a different model of carburetor.
