Last year when I was mowing hay with my 630, if I got into thicker grass the mower would sometimes stop running. I thought the belts were slipping but I noticed the pto would stop turning. The tractor seemed like it was still working a bit too. I kicked the pto off and the load went away. Is there some type of clutch related to the pto. It seems like it is slipping. No problems using the JD 348 baler or NH 1010 bale wagon.

Ed, Its best you take a look at any PTO clutch adjustment as soon as possible, becasue if the clutch needs adjusting yet you continue using it slipping, it can cause harm. If the seal isnt leaking as clooney mentioned (the PTO fluid should be light and clear or reddish hydraulic fluid looking and not heavy darker looking) first take a look at the engaging rod and then you may have to adjust the clutch tension which can be made through the side of the PTO clutch housing. I replaced my 620 PTO clutches not too long ago and if I recall correctly, the 630 is about the same.

Ed, yes the PTO has multi plate clutch. It sounds like either the clutch is slipping due to needing an adjustment, or the PTO pump seal is leaking & you have trans oil in the PTO clutch housing. ~Check the PTO oil level & if it is over full the seal is probably leaking & allowing gear oil in the PTO housing [big job to repair]. If the level is ok then all it probably needs is a PTO clutch adjustment. To adjust that PTO clutch you really should get a manual as there are pictures in the manual to help with the adjustment procedure. The adjustment isn't rocket science but does get a little involved....
