My pony motor on my 720 diesel is hurt. I know that it should be rebuilt but I was wondering what I can do to limp it to summer. Went to start this weekend and would not wind up. Checked points and they seem to look ok. I then pulled the plugs and thats when things got worse, the front two plugs were carboned up and were oil soaked. So I started thinking what would happen if I put a little hotter plug in those two cylinders. What is plug number that you guys run? Also, the price for points, condensers form Deere are nuts. I see on K&K website things are more reasonalbe. Are the points and condensers sold as sets or individualy? Thank you,
Tired

I have aftermarket coils, points and condensers in my 720 and 820. They both run fine. Got my parts from Magneeders. They advertize in both magazines.

Lloyd:

I also bought pony ignition parts from Magneeders (417-958-7863), and they performed just fine.

Another good source is Taylor Equipment (800-368-3276).

Tiredpony, you might just have tired spark plugs. Before doing anything else just install a new set of Champion J-8C [the original spec was J-8]. The J-8C are a little less apt to foul. Gap the plugs to .025". ~ Make sure the plug wires are still plugged solidly into the back of the coils & that the points are clean & free of oxidation [re-gap the points to .020"]
~Once you install the new plugs & you get it running reach in & feel each spark plug base to see if they are all hot. If you have a cold one it is probably fouled again & you will have to address that with engine work or hotter plugs [probably a J-10]. If you have 2 cold plugs on the same head you probably have points, condenser or more than likely a coil problem on the side that's cold. Bad coil(s) are a very common problem on those ponys as well as oxidized points & bad plug wires.
~You might want to pull the pony air cleaner & make sure it is clean & the wire mesh is not plugged with crud [common on an older diesel]. If the air cleaner is plugged it will cause plug fouling & oil burning....

Tired,

I have heard that trying to put "after market" points and/or condensers in our JD's can cause problems...the points need some strong spring to them and the after markets sometimes do not fit the bill...most of the time it is good to buy the points and condenser together...JD is more costly, but in the long run, so is our troubleshooting time...
