Early JD 1020 steering problems?

I am going to look at a JD 1020 diesel that is, apparently, one of the earlier versions of this model. Several John Deere authorities have warned me about these early tractors as they often have problems with the steering. I am hoping to get opinions regarding just how dire these problems are and if it is even worth going to see what sounds like an otherwise very nice tractor?

Eric,

I have a '66 model 1020. Only steering problem to report is when the power steering pump blew a seal one time. Other than that, works fine.

Hi Ray,

I'm in Fishers - got the replacement part from Reynolds. It's the seal that goes around the pump shaft as it moves out of the pump and into the timing chain housing to mate with the gears there. This happened a few years ago, haven't had any problem with it since. I'd guess those old lines are a bit brittle, so if I tried to bypass the little pump that's been rebuild and put in a splitter, I might create as many problems as I'd solve.
