70dlarry, you don't set the push rod length by clearance, you adjust the length until the pump index mark on the pump [or pointer on the scintilla pump] plunger lines up with the mark on the side of the pump cut-out window with either the #1 or #2 injector mark on the flywheel lined up with the mark on the timing gear cover housing on compression for the cylinder you are working on. CAUTION: be sure to do the proper adjustment before rotating the engine or you risk bottoming the pump & damaging it.
~You really should follow the service manual to set those pump push rods but can do it without the manual if you can figure out what pumps you have & if you can identify the timing window marks & how they should align [the manual has a good picture].

You do not set clearance on those. There are timing marks on the pumps that you have to set. What you do is remove the flywheel cover, decompress the engine, roll the flywheel over to the #1 inj mark. Now then check the #1 injector pump on the top side, if they are bendix there will be a pointer and a mark scribe line on the barrel, make the line on the barrel and the line on the pointer even, tighten up the push rod, next roll the flywheel around to the number 2 inj mark and time the #2 pump the same as the first, making sure that after you time the pumps, and roll the flywheel over, that the scribe line on the barrel does not disapear out of the window on the cast housing on the pump, it may partially disapear, thats normal, just not way into the pump. You should acquire a tech manual to really know the proper procedures, you can ruin the pumps real quick internally if not careful. Good Luck
