One of our 4430's has been sitting all winter in the barn, not exposed to the elements. This morning I went to start it, and it started to turn over, then it just started clicking. The batteries are brand new John Deere Strong box. Anybody have any idea that may be wrong, I think it's the starter, but I'm not sure what part. Thanks for all your help.

John Deere makes them that way so they loose there charge after setting for long periods of time (real pain in the ass) The batteries are suppose to last longer ?? I think you just need to put the charger on and you will be good to go for the rest of the year.

Are the batteries brand-new as in today brand-new, or brand-new as in new before you parked if for the winter brand-new? The no cranking and clicking symptom sounds like a classic low battery or poor battery terminal connection to me. If you have a digital radio in the cab, there will be a parasitic draw involved that could drain the batteries when sitting for several months. What shape are the cables in? Double-check the condition of the cables, and clean the ends if needed. Also check the ground cable going to the oil filter base on the RH side of the engine. I've seen a poor connection there cause starting problems. If all of those things check out, check your batter voltage at the starter. It needs to be at least 12.5 volts or so. Also check to see if you're getting current to the S-terminal (start terminal) on the solenoid. That is the wire that actually engages the solenoid and operates the starter. If all of those things check out, you could have a bad start relay, which should be located up under the hood on the front of the firewall. Trace the wire going to the start terminal back to the start relay to find it. I'm kind of throwing a lot of things at you at once, but it's kind of hard to diagnose things like that over the internet. With the tractor right here in front of me, I could likely find your problem very quickly and have you going in no time, as that starting system is pretty simple.

This was an annual event on the 4230 that we owned.. Remove cables from batteries, clean the ends, charge the batteries, hookup the cables. Did this every spring, never had any starting problems all year.

To me this is good preventative maintenance.

Absolutely, Fred. Most starting problems can be traced to a lack of general maintenance. It's actually pretty rare that an actual component fails.

If the batteries were new last fall you might just have a slow drain in the circuit through a low resistance short.
