I have obtained several NOS parts for my E/S type RM magneto, including points, condenser and coil. I know you have not worked on a type RM before but my question is general.

I have made a crude test stand to test my work as I progressed through the rebuilding. The test stand has two spark plugs gapped to 3/16 and I can turn the mag with my hand drill. The mag is producing a good blue spark at the plugs.

My question is, with the distributor cap off I can observe the points while the mag is in operation on the test stand. The points show small blue arcing as the points are opened. I have cleaned the points as you described in a previous post (Thanks) and have also tried my original condenser with the same results. If I place the second condenser in parallel the arcing is reduces slightly. Is this normal? Since E/S parts are so hard to come by should I try using a modern capacitor? If so what value, I have heard 0.2 microfarad @ 200 volts is good for most mags?

Thanks for all your help!

Mark, a little blue arcing is normal. The condensers for those old mags are pretty specific & should be kept as close to design as possible.
~If you are not loading the coil through it's output to a spark plug or fixed gap you will get more point arcing & possibly internal damage to the coil.

Yes, I did have the spark plug connected during the test. Thanks Clooney!
