We have a few 2 cylinder tractors that we use in parades. We never have them hooked to anything to open the governors. Sometimes they get where they don't run right. We're thinking that carbon is getting built up in the cylinders. Here's my question. How could somebody rig something up to the pto, similar to a dyno, to load a tractor engine with? There should be a way to put pressure on the engine with the pto. Anybody got any ideas? Has any of you made anything similar to what I'm wanting to build? Thanks alot for the help.

Brandon

Well, I just hook up a big oak log to the drawbar and drag it through the dirt. Works good anywhere actually, like along the side of the road. Don't dig in too deep there though. You can rig a chain so the hyd will hold the front of the log off the ground but you don't get the drag as well.

If all you want to do is blow it out and unless you live on the dead flat, hook a loaded wagon and find a hill and go up the hill in as high a gear as it can hanle and make it bark. On the way down the engine will wind up holding the load back and you will feel the carbon hit you oin the face. Us hill people never have any carbon build up.

Brandon, before I got my dyno I would sometimes belt up a small tractor to a large one and make it work. I have had smaller tractors belted up to my pulling tractor (lots of compression) and with the puller running slowly would press in the clutch on a smaller tractor and make it pull. It is a good way to adjust the carburetor and such things and to look for leaks on a newly put together engine. Going the other way is a good way to crank a hand crank tractor to be sure it has oil pressure, too, without starting it. Be sure and cross the belt (unless one of the tractors is a H) and you should get along just fine. Hope this helps. Mike

Before I found a dyno I used a pto generator and
an electric furnace just switch on more elements for more load.

I have the same problem from time to time. I like to just put around. Seems as if the tractor wants to get up and go. I fixed a lot of my carbon build up with a hot plug. I run Champion D21 in my B when im just showing and parading. It helps it to start better, and run cleaner. The only drawback is that if you plan on using the tractor for hard work you will have to put a cooler plug back in. The D21 is too hot for hard use. Another thing that helps to keep carbon build up down is to run premium gas. If you dont use premium gas just try some. If you dont think it helps then go back to regular. I never use anything but 93 octane in any gasoline engines. For your pulling question. If you have a feed mill it will load a small tractor quite well (H orB) If not I often just drawbar hook something like a wagon or whatever, and go down the road in high gear. I have lots of hills in my area, so the soot gets blown out.

Unless we are talking about an all fuel tractor a D21 is too hot for repeat hard use. I dont know if you have ever seen one, but D21s scorch pistons at least, and burn holes if it goes on long enough in regular gas models. The all fuel tractors do need the hot plug while burning distilate. Champion D16, which is what Deere recomends for gasoline models, will get fouled out pretty quick in the all fuel engines, and they also dont burn the distillate as completley as the hot plug. Im sorry that I didnt make myself clear in my post. I should not have assumed that we were talking about gasoline models. I guess that you would be just as likley to have an all fuel. I will try to think before I post next time.

Brandon, I was using a large water pump that was PTO driven to load my 2-cylinder tractors & just closed a large gate valve on the outlet to increase the load. It worked good until I put a 720D on it last year & blew the pump up....

Ever considered building a baker fan? That would be a good way to load the engines - drive it off the belt pulley.

On a related note do any of you guys (or gals) know where I can get plans for a Baker Fan. I'd like to build one. I could probably go to the closest show grounds here and try to measure one up but I'd like a little more guidance and maybe some instruction as to if it is possible to measure HP using one of these in place of a dyno. We've got enough old horses in the neighborhood that we could make use of one of these units. Any help is appreciated.

Go over to the Tractor Tales board and enter "Baker Fan" in the search bar at the top of the page. That discussion occurrs on there from time to time. Lots of people seem to use combine cylinders.

Good luck, Fireman

How about a truck rear axel with a good hand brake and good linings.

Take a wooden fence post and press against the flywheel rim when running,or drive in high gear and apply the brakes hard to open the governer and burn the weeds out of the engine,or hood two tractors drawbar to drawbar with chain and let them go to it. Hold the governers wide open to over speed up to double speed then they will clean out.
