I have a 430 that has been converted to 12 volt and it seems to work pretty good but the sight of an alternator hanging off the side of these tractors kind of bothers me more that it should for some reason. I don't want to rewire and change everything around to go back to 6v. I have heard about converting 6 v generators to 12v and I wonder why you don't see or hear of this being done more often. Is it the cost? Does it not work very well? Anybody have any experience with this?

Bguy, yes, you generator can be converted to 12 volts output. Most generator shops can do it, or supply the parts needed. You could even use your original 6 volt generator to keep your 12 volt battery up as long as you keep the engine RPM's up & don't use the lights long. A stock 6 volt generator will probably make 20+ volts open circuit, so when regulated to 13.7 will make enough amperage to charge the battery. In most cases just adding a 12 volt regulator will be enough to keep the battery up.
~I can't give you a price on converting yours to a 12 volt generator but your local generator shop can. ~Probably the cheapest way out is to buy a used 12 volt generator of about the same size & just install that with a good 12 volt regulator...
