Hi everyone. I was trying to jump start my skidloader with my 720 gas and when I was cranking the skidloader the battery in my tractor exploded. No one hurt thankfully. My question is why would that happen? I've done it before without a problem.I had the cable connected right. I'd like to find the cause before I buy a new battery. Thanks!

The reason your battery exploded is as Clooney mentioned, It was probably a spark due to a weak connection. Batteries produce hydrogen gasses this is very explosive, When connecting booster cables always put the positve cable on first and then connect the ground to the engine block or frame.By attaching cables in this fashion the chance of an accidental spark at the battery will be eliminated.

Back in the day, our pipline crew ran into a slew of exploding batteries when we used 6 cyclinder Lincon Welders to 'jump' em. The arc that started the explosions was internal as vice grips clamped on as hard as you can don't spark. I suspect that especially in older batteries a separator drops drops down just enough to allow two plates to warp due to the excess current flow and when they touch - it's all over. All over me, all over you, and all over the machine too. Try to keep your current flow under 75 amps and you should be OK.

After the third 100 pound battery blew in as many hours they tried pull starting instead.

John W---- Possible vapors from your 720 battery and a spark when hitting the starter on your skid steer, causing the 720 jumper connection to the battery,to spark under load, causing the explossion.----- ---theory and all----- good luck-Jim.

John W, I agree with Jim's theory, only I think the spark was caused by a poor connection at the 720's battery, in either the jumper cables or the battery cable end..

One time the battery blew up on my dad on the 60 when the batterycharger was still on and he didn't realize and he stepped on the starter. Luckily, his only injuries were a piece of plastic hit him under the eye and left a scar, but it could have been much worse. That battery acid was hard on the paint around the seat.
